Choose the venue scope
Liquor & Gaming NSW says a voluntary agreement can exclude a person from gaming areas of hotels and clubs, and may cover an entire hotel or club. Casino processes are separate. Write down the specific venues and areas that create risk before enrolling; a local venue agreement should not be assumed to cover every venue in NSW.
What the scheme must provide
The NSW page says hotels and clubs cannot refuse a patron's request to participate. Minimum scheme requirements include information about operation, a written and signed undertaking, an opportunity to seek independent advice, counselling-service details and a way for responsible staff to identify the participant. The government page gives a six-month minimum for hotels and clubs.
Casino and online gambling are different
The casino operator issues exclusion notifications to people who request them, while BetStop is the national route for licensed Australian online and phone wagering. A venue exclusion does not automatically block every app, and BetStop does not replace a club or hotel agreement for gaming-machine areas. Use both where both channels are involved.
Prepare before enrolling
- List venues, online accounts and payment methods separately.
- Bring only the identity material the official process requires.
- Download any transaction or complaint record you genuinely need.
- Ask how long the agreement runs and which areas it covers.
- Record the counselling or programme contact provided.
Strengthen the barrier
Self-exclusion is a practical access restriction, not treatment and not a promise that every attempt will be detected. Remove stored payment methods, protect essential funds and tell a trusted person which schemes are active. GambleAware NSW says a counsellor can explain options and assist with self-exclusion; check its current contact page before relying on a saved number.
If an excluded venue remains accessible
Do not gamble to test enforcement. Leave the area, note the venue, time and part of the premises, and contact the scheme provider or official regulator route. Preserve the agreement without posting identity documents publicly. The official sources were checked 4 August 2026.
